Woman arrested over fire that shut down Perth Airport and threatened homes
A fire that threatened lives and homes in Perth’s east and temporarily shut down the airport, has led to the arrest of a 41-year-old woman.
At about 1.30pm on Thursday parts of Forrestfield, Kalamunda and Lesmurdie was evacuated with authorities issuing an emergency warning, stating that an out-of-control bushfire was quickly spreading and threatening lives and homes.
Residents outside the fire zone couldn’t return for several hours with roads still closed.
Firefighters fought to battle the blaze that tore through parts of Mundy Regional Park.
Later that afternoon, Perth airport was temporarily shut down after it suffered a massive power outage as a result of the fire.
Flights were unable to land and power was completely lost in and around the airport.
Some passengers were being told to disembark their flights if they’re en route for Perth, and some arrivals were delayed.
On Saturday, a WA Police spokesperson said a woman had been arrested in connection with the incident.
“Officers from Strike Force Vulcan and Forrestfield Police have charged a 41-year-old woman following an arson incident in Forrestfield on Thursday,” she said.
“It will be alleged, between 1.30pm and 1.40pm, the accused attended a firebreak along Holmes Road and Whistlepipe Court, and used a mobile heat source to set alight multiple fires along the firebreak.”
The 41-year-old Kalamunda woman has been charged with wilfully light or cause to be lit a fire likely to injure or damage.
She is due before Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Strike Force Vulcan officers urge anyone with any information in relation to bushfires to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.crimestopperswa.com.au.
