Syrian national indicted for aiding 2025 Berlin Holocaust Memorial stabbing

A Syrian national has been indicted in Berlin for aiding and abetting a 2025 knife attack at the Holocaust Memorial that left a Spanish tourist critically injured.

A Syrian national, Khalaf A., has been indicted on charges of aiding and abetting attempted murder in connection with a 2025 stabbing at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, Germany’s chief federal prosecutor announced in a press release on Wednesday.

According to the press release, the prosecutor indicted Khalaf A. on August 21, 2026, after determining there was sufficient evidence to suspect him of aiding and abetting attempted murder and causing dangerous bodily harm.

The chief federal prosecutor alleges that Khalaf A. spent the afternoon with the assailant, Wassim Al M., helping him plan the attack and encouraging him to carry it out. Al M., who was prosecuted separately, is accused of attacking a man with a knife at the Field of Stelae at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin-Mitte and causing life-threatening injuries, according to the statement.

According to previous reports, Al M. attacked the victim with a knife, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. The chief federal prosecutor said that Al M. “acted out of radical Islamist and antisemitic motivations.”

Al M. was found guilty of the attack on March 5, 2026, by the Higher Regional Court of Berlin and sentenced to 13 years in prison on charges including attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm. However, the ruling is not yet final.

Khalaf A. has been held in pretrial detention since May 27.

Berlin stabbing victim survived life-threatening injuries

Previous reporting from May indicated that little information was available about the victim, who was identified as a 30-year-old Spanish tourist from Bilbao.

According to previous reports, the victim was taken to a hospital with serious neck wounds, underwent surgery, and was placed in an induced coma. He later survived the attack.

Following the attack, Berlin Victims’ Commissioner Roland Weber said that “The brutal knife attack last Friday at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin was a deeply inhumane and disturbing act.”
