Commanders still await Daniels timeline, will start Mariota vs. Seahawks

The Washington Commanders have not established a timeline for star quarterback Jayden Daniels to return from a dislocated left elbow.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn said Monday that Daniels underwent an MRI earlier in the day and will consult with specialists over the next two days. The Commanders will formulate a plan for the third-year quarterback's recovery and return after receiving opinions from the specialists, according to Quinn.

With Daniels sidelined, Marcus Mariota will start at quarterback Sunday against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Daniels suffered the injury on the final play of the first half in Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. It marked the second straight season that the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner dislocated the elbow in his non-throwing arm.

Daniels missed all but one game in the second half of last season after dislocating the elbow in a blowout loss to Seattle on Nov. 2. He was out for four weeks after initially suffering the injury before returning on Dec. 7 against the Minnesota Vikings.

That injury occurred when Daniels used his non-throwing arm while trying to brace himself on a fall, and the same thing happened Sunday against the Cowboys. Daniels' left elbow appeared to bend the wrong way Sunday as he braced himself and threw a wild pass that was incomplete as time expired.
