Trade surplus strengthens Indonesia's external resilience: Minister

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso stated that Indonesia's trade surplus of US$10.61 billion from January to September 2026 strengthened the country’s external resilience amid global economic uncertainty.

He noted that the achievement reflects the trade sector's ability to maintain strong export performance and sustain a surplus.

"Maintaining a trade surplus of US$10.61 billion through September 2026 demonstrates Indonesia's solid external resilience amidst global dynamics," Santoso said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The cumulative surplus was driven by a US$34.21 billion non-oil and gas trade surplus, which cushioned a US$23.60 billion deficit in the oil and gas sector.

In September 2026 alone, Indonesia recorded a trade surplus of US$3.36 billion, comprising a US$5.67 billion non-oil and gas surplus and a US$2.31 billion oil and gas deficit.

This figure represents a slight decrease from the US$3.55 billion surplus reported in August 2026.

The minister explained that the non-oil and gas surplus from January to September 2026 was largely driven by three key commodities: animal and vegetable fats and oils at US$29.31 billion, mineral fuels at US$21.42 billion, and iron and steel at US$13.95 billion.

Among trading partners, the United States contributed the most to the non-oil and gas surplus at US$17.37 billion, followed by India and the Philippines at US$10.81 billion and US$6.25 billion, respectively.

He added that this strong performance was backed by the competitiveness of Indonesia's commodities and solid trade relations with core partner nations.

In addition to maintaining traditional markets, Indonesia continues to push for export market diversification, tapping into non-traditional destinations. Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Egypt entered the top 10 trading partners contributing to the non-oil and gas surplus.

These market expansion efforts are expected to sustain consistent trade surpluses while reinforcing Indonesia's external resilience against shifts in the global economy.
