Michael Carrick has admitted he's in the dark over his future after Manchester United were thrashed by Bournemouth to leave him on the brink of the sack at Old Trafford.

United followed up their humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como with another shambolic display as they lost 3-0 to Marco Rose's side on Sunday.

Carrick -- who dropped captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench -- was already under severe pressure following the result in Italy on Wednesday.

And after United's winless run was extended to nine games, the 45-year-old accepted his fate as head coach is now out of his hands.

"I totally understand the situation," Carrick told a post-match news conference.

"I'm not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I'm carrying on as normal, and you know, I love this place.

"I'll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything really. So that's kind of it. You know, I'm not expecting anything either way."

Despite a fifth defeat in eight games, Carrick was clapped off by the United fans as he left the pitch after the final whistle.

The Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the players all came under fire from supporters during the second half and immediately after the game.

Carrick, however, was serenaded off in what could possibly be his last match in charge.

"I have to say, really mixed emotions," he said afterwards.

"I probably didn't really expect that from the supporters, if I'm honest, but I've always felt the support and always felt that connection with them anyway.

"They're probably sick of me saying all the time, the amount of times I've sat here and said it, but the respect that I have for them and for them to kind of show that back meant an awful lot.

"It's still such a difficult situation and to go through a day like we have done, in a spell like we have done, is certainly difficult to take. There's real mixed emotions in there for sure."
