Olivia Rodrigo, Noted ‘Sex and the City’ Fan, Recruits Cynthia Nixon For Christmas Video

“Take Me Home (4 Christmas)" marks Rodrigo's first holiday song

Olivia Rodrigo has made her Sex and the City dreams come true. The pop superstar has recruited Cynthia Nixon for the “Take Me Home (4 Christmas)” video, her first-ever holiday song.

The video features Rodrigo, Nixon, and SNL cast member Ben Marshall (who is also part of the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy). It starts with Rodrigo cleaning up after an all-night rager, stepping over Marshall as he lies passed on the floor. She envisions him bringing her home to his family during the holidays and plays out some scenarios that are very The Family Stone-inspired. Nixon takes on the role of her welcoming future-in-law as Rodrigo bonds with the family, joins in on charades, makes gingerbread houses, and helps carve out a Christmas bird.

In the days leading up to the video, Rodrigo posted a clip of the crew playing a game of Celebrity, only everyone had “Olivia Rodrigo” written on their headbands. She also joined Nixon by the Christmas tree in another video, which played the Sex and the City theme.

Earlier this year, Rodrigo told Jimmy Fallon that Sex and the City is her favorite show, and that she’s “watched every single episode maybe three times.” She said the series inspired her recent album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, particularly the relationship between Nixon’s character Miranda Hobbs and Steve Brady (David Eigenberg).

“When Miranda and Steve are getting back together she’s crying and she’s like, ‘Steve, any time something funny I just want to tell you,'” she told Fallon. “And I remember watching that and being like, ‘Oh my God, I have to write a song about this.’” She did exactly that, inserting the line in “Maggots for Brains.” (“Everything feels moldy like the fruit that’s in my fridge/And everything that’s funny, I wish I could tell to him.”) Following her Fallon interview, Nixon posted a video of her dancing to “Drivers License” in her kitchen.

While “Take Me Home (4 Christmas)” is Rodrigo’s first original holiday song, she covered Joni Mitchell’s Christmas classic “River” back in 2020, for a High School Musical: The Musical: The Series holiday special. It follows a recent “first” of hers: a hit remix of “Expectations,” which featured her pal Chappell Roan.

Over the summer, Rodrigo headlined her inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival in Great Park in Irvine, California. She brought Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan, and Alanis Morissette onstage, while the all-women festival lineup featured acts that included Roan, Doechii, Bikini Kill, and more. The proceeds totaled $20 million and went to nonprofits benefitting women and girls. She’s currently on tour in support of You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love through summer 2027.
