Cape Town motorists should expect severe delays on Monday as urgent repairs continue on a pedestrian bridge on the N1.

Motorists using the N1 inbound in Cape Town are warned to expect severe delays during Monday morning’s peak hours as urgent repairs continue on a pedestrian bridge damaged by a truck.

City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said engineers worked throughout Sunday and would continue overnight to repair the bridge on FW De Klerk Boulevard near Paarden Eiland.

Two cranes are lifting and realigning a 50-tonne section of the bridge damaged in a collision.

The heavy-duty repair work has required the closure of sections of the N1 in both the inbound and outbound directions.

“While teams are on site and will continue to work overnight, motorists are advised to plan for the Monday morning commute as closures may still be in place,” Quintas said.

Early on Saturday morning, a heavy flatbed articulated truck carrying a large industrial tank struck the underside of the Lower Church Street pedestrian bridge.

The impact dislodged the load, which tipped into the roadway and caused significant damage to the bridge, including concrete spalling, exposed reinforcing steel and cracking.

Motorists are urged to avoid the affected N1 stretch and consider alternative routes, including Albert Road/Sir Lowry Road through Woodstock and Salt River, or the N2 via Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
