Villagers hand over young orangutan to conservation officials: BKSDA

Sampit, C Kalimantan (ANTARA) - A four-year-old female orangutan found beside a village road in Central Kalimantan has been handed over to conservation authorities for examination and further care, according to Sampit Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Commander Muriansyah.
Residents who found the orangutan wanted to hand her over to conservation officers.
"After receiving the report, we arranged a visit to the village for the handover," Muriansyah said here Wednesday.
Muriansyah said his office received a report from Bagendang Tengah Village Head Untung at around 10 a.m. on Monday, November 2, that residents had secured the orangutan.
Officers departed at around 2:20 p.m. after inspecting a nearby rubber and rattan plantation where orangutans had been sighted in Ganepo village, Seranau district.
Muriansyah and two colleagues, Riska and Angga, arrived in Bagendang Tengah at around 3:30 p.m. after traveling by car.
"The handover was completed smoothly at around 5:40 p.m. Our preliminary examination found that the orangutan was female and approximately four years old," he said.
The legally protected animal was placed in the care of BKSDA officers for examination and treatment in accordance with conservation procedures.
On Tuesday, November 3, veterinarians from BKSDA's Natural Resources Conservation Section II and the Orangutan Foundation UK (OF-UK) arrived in Sampit at around 2 p.m. to examine the animal.
The initial examination found that the orangutan appeared healthy. However, more comprehensive medical tests would be conducted at the Section II office in Pangkalan Bun.
The team left for Pangkalan Bun at around 3 p.m. with the orangutan for further examinations to assess her health and determine subsequent care.
