The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Saturday said the Visayas grid will be placed on red and yellow alerts due to limited power supply available.

The red alert will be in effect from 5 to 9 p.m., while the yellow alert will be raised from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 9 to 10 p.m., the NGCP said in its 8 a.m. advisory.

The grid's available capacity is 2,109 MW while peak demand is expected to reach 2,346 MW, it said.

"11 plants are on forced outage on September, 4 plants since August 2026, 1 plant since July, 2 plants since June, 7 plants since May, 3 plants since 2025, 2 plants since 2024, 2 plants since 2023, and 1 plant since 2021, while 14 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 1,052.4MW unavailable to the grid," the company added.

The large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3 in Visayas are unavailable, while there is limited power import from the Mindanao grid. Both factors contributed to the declaration of red and yellow alerts, NGCP said.

"A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," it added. —KG, GMA News
