Indonesia to champion global resilience, Palestinian cause at UNGA

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia will stress global resilience and reaffirm support for Palestine when Foreign Minister Sugiono delivers the country’s national statement at the 81st UN General Assembly on Saturday, September 26.

“Indonesia’s national statement will carry a core message on the importance of building global resilience, underpinned by robust national and regional foundations,” Sugiono said in a video address released on Wednesday.

Amid economic and geopolitical uncertainty, Sugiono said collective resilience was essential to addressing challenges across multiple sectors.

Indonesia will also outline its positions on international peace and security, multilateralism, UN reform and strengthening the voice of the Global South.

Ahead of the address, Sugiono has maintained an active diplomatic schedule on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

He attended a ministerial meeting of the Group of Eight Arab and Islamic Countries, comprising Indonesia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The meeting focused on ensuring diplomatic peace efforts produce tangible results for Palestinians.

Sugiono called for a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian access and faster recovery and reconstruction in Gaza.

Sugiono also attended “The Road Ahead: One Year After the New York Declaration,” a high-level dialogue focused on advancing the Two-State Solution.

He said the diplomatic roadmap developed last year now needed to move from statements to concrete action.

Indonesia also joined the MIKTA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, chaired by Australia this year, where ministers discussed changing multilateral dynamics and the role of middle powers.

Sugiono urged MIKTA to act as a bridge amid divisions among global powers and as a catalyst for practical international cooperation.

Indonesia also participated in the ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting with Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile, focusing on cooperation in education, tourism, digitalization and smart cities.

The 81st UN General Assembly opened in New York on September 8 under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was elected president of the 81st UN General Assembly, succeeding former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

The General Debate is being held from September 22 to 26 and on September 28, according to the United Nations.
