Wiretapping scandal: President, ministers illegally tapped since 2025

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto, government ministers and officials, political figures, and media have been affected by illegal wiretapping by three high-ranking police officers, LSP, ASN, and EH, since 2025, the Indonesian Police confirmed.

"They were suspected of carrying out illegal tapping of phone numbers belonging to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, state officials, political figures, media personalities, mass organizations, non-governmental organizations, and entrepreneurs," Indonesian Police's Criminal Investigation Agency Chief Commissioner General Asep Saprudin said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The suspects are allegedly instructing the wiretapping to be carried out without valid authorization and outside law enforcement purposes in the 2025-2026 period.

They have also deleted electronic data related to the illegal wiretapping in October 2026 to remove any traces of their crimes, he added.

Saprudin emphasized that any monitoring activities, especially wiretapping, should abide by human rights, legality, consumer protection, and secrecy principles as stipulated in Police Chief Regulation No. 5 of 2010.

Wiretapping activities are also limited to investigation and prosecution purposes over activities deemed criminal by the national law.

The three suspects are facing prosecution under multiple provisions of Indonesian law.

The provisions include Article 258 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for threatening national security; Article 332, which provides for up to 6 years’ imprisonment for unauthorized access to electronic systems; and Article 32 of the Information and Electronic Transactions Law, which carries a maximum sentence of eight years.

The three suspects will be placed at the Bareskrim Prison in Jakarta to assist with the investigation.
