RIP | Marcel Angel dies in Killarney Raceway crash at Extreme Festival

South African motorsport is mourning Marcel Angel after the veteran racing driver died in a crash at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town on Saturday.

Angel, 62, from Llandudno, was competing in the Extreme SuperCars category at the National Extreme Festival on 19 September when he crashed at the end of the back straight during the first Supercar race of the day.

Medical personnel and race officials rushed to the scene, but Angel succumbed to his injuries.

Killarney International Raceway, in a statement issued on behalf of the Western Province Motor Club, confirmed his death and said the racing community had lost an experienced competitor.

Organisers cancelled the remainder of the Extreme Festival programme out of respect for Angel and his family.

Motorsport South Africa mourns Marcel Angel

Motorsport South Africa (MSA) also confirmed Angel’s death and extended its condolences to those closest to him.

“Motorsport South Africa extends its sincere condolences to Marcel’s family, friends, fellow competitors and everyone who knew him,” MSA said.

“Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Extreme Festival organisers described Angel as a valued member of the motorsport community whose loss would be deeply felt by those who knew and raced alongside him. Organisers also asked that his family’s privacy be respected.

Killarney extended its condolences to Angel’s wife, Mica, as well as his family and friends.

Marcel Angel won at Killarney weeks before fatal crash

Angel’s death came less than a month after he claimed victory at the same Cape Town circuit.

On 22 August 2026, Angel drove his #51 Autohaus Angel Ferrari 488 GT3 to overall victory in the Sport and GT category at Killarney.

He finished ahead of Wayne Hoffman in a Porsche 992 GT3 Cup and Divan Wentzel in a Porsche GT3 Cup. Motorsport South Africa’s report from the meeting described Angel as a tough opponent at the front of the field.

Angel also built a long career in South African motorsport away from the Extreme SuperCars series.

He founded Autohaus Angel, a Cape Town vehicle dealership established in 1988. The company says Angel competed across several motorsport disciplines, won multiple South African championships and earned South African colours.
