Coronation Street reveals tense first look as Sarah's trial ends

Translate

It's set to be a tense week on Coronation Street, as the trial of Sarah Platt concludes. But will the beloved character be fully cleared, or will the judge throw the book at her for the murder of Theo Silverton?

In a first-look clip, which can be viewed below, from Monday's (19 October) episode, Sarah is understandably nervous at the prospect of spending a sizable portion of her remaining life behind bars.

As she lays in bed, the words of the prosecution barrister ring in her head. She was branded a "cold-blooded murderer", but she soon has to concentrate as she is told that the jury has reached a verdict.

Speaking about the upcoming scenes, an insider for the ITV soap said: "Sarah's resigned herself to a life behind bars. She's already said goodbye to her old life and put plans in place for her son, Harry."

"All her optimism is shattered and now she's prepared for the worst – a miserable existence locked up for life," they continued, before noting that close friend Todd Grimshaw - who was in an abusive relationship with Theo - would be a nervous wreck.

"Todd can't bear the idea of Sarah being found guilty," they said. "Theo's abuse took so much from him, and now he might lose his best friend because of that evil man. Todd might've felt conflicted at the start, but locking Sarah away doesn't feel like justice."

It remains to be seen whether Sarah will be found guilty or not, but she has an ardent supporter in the shape of James Cartwright, the actor who played the villainous Theo until his departure in June.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the Inside Soap Awards last month, the actor said: "I really hope she gets off with it. To the jury - let her off! He [Theo] was an absolute stinker, what a horror of a man.

"It's great how it ended, it's great that he met his end. And absolutely - free Sarah Platt! And also let's not get Gary [Windass] involved in this - I mean, he disposed of a bit, but he did it for love!"

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
