SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in the Ilocos region turned over three solar-powered irrigation projects in Piddig, Ilocos Norte, to improve water access for farmers and boost agricultural productivity.

The Bimmanga, Sallaguid and San Antonio projects will provide irrigation to 45 hectares of farmland, using solar energy to help ensure a more reliable water supply.

House Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos joined the turnover ceremony on Thursday (Oct. 15), supporting efforts to increase farm productivity and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Julio Tomas, president of the Sociodad de Labrador de Sallaguid Irrigators Association Inc based in Piddig town., said the solar-powered pump had addressed irrigation problems in the more remote portions of their farmland, where rice crops had previously died during the second cropping season due to insufficient water.

“We are deeply grateful for the solar-powered irrigation project. Before, watering the farthest portions of our farms was a problem because our rice crops would die during the second cropping season,” Tomas said in Ilocano.

“With the help of the solar pump provided to us, by God’s grace, we can now meet the water needs of the 10-hectare area it serves,” he added.

The projects are expected to make irrigation easier for farms that previously struggled to receive adequate water, helping farmers sustain crop production and improve their livelihoods. INQ
