Thirteen clubs are preparing to compete in the inaugural Anambra Governor’s Cup Lawn Tennis Tournament, scheduled for October 27 to 30 in Awka.

The competition, organised by Anambra Country Club in partnership with Audi Company Limited, aims to promote tennis, physical fitness and stronger relationships among clubs across the state.

Anambra Country Club president Ozo Ejiamatu Enekwechi said the tournament would promote healthy living and wider participation in recreational sports. He confirmed plans to make it an annual event.

On the club’s inclusiveness, Enekwechi said, “Any person who meets the membership criteria of the club, irrespective of his or her political party affiliation, is free to be a member of this club.”

Audi Company chief executive Clem Ifezue announced a N20m sponsorship as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

He said the support was intended to promote sporting participation and healthy living, while also commending Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the facility in Awka.

Deputy Governor Dr Onyeka Ibezim is expected to perform the opening ceremony on October 27, while Governor Soludo will present the trophy and prizes at the closing ceremony on October 30.

Participating clubs include Anambra Country Club, Onitsha Recreation Club, Onitsha Sports Club, Onitsha Country Club, Nnewi Sports Club and Beverly Hills Recreation Club, among others.
