Courtney A. Kemp Tells Deadline’s L.A. Law Summit What’s The Biggest IP Challenge Creators Face; ‘Power’ & ‘Nemesis’ EP Says “Protect The Chain Of Custody”

“I think those of us who are writers probably don’t understand how much we need to protect the chain of custody or chain of evidence of us coming up with an original idea,” said Courtney A. Kemp of the most misunderstood aspect of intellectual property confronting most creators in the entertainment industry today.

Speaking a Deadline’s inaugural L.A. Law Summit, the Power and Nemesis co-creator added: “Or, if it is an intellectual property-based idea, how much you need to protect the evidence of your take on it and how important all those emails are.” As Kemp spoke,

Beginning the day on September 17 in front of a capacity crowd at Deadline’s West L.A. HQ, the “Rights & Wrongs of IP” panel saw Kemp and a trio of top attorneys from top firms delve into how creators can protect themselves in this digital economy and what are the primary pitfalls to avoid. To that, one very fast growing and encompassing technology stood out in the IP panel and all day at the L.A. Law Summit: Artificial Intelligence.

“The layer of AI complexity and everything that we deal with is something that we have to confront,” Blank Rome’s Cheryl S. Chang pinpointed on the IP panel. Acknowledging the Wild West aspect of AI when it comes to IP. the firm partner and litigator noted: “And our state and federal legislatures are kind of paralyzed because they can’t catch up with the speed of what’s happening, and they don’t understand it.”

The half day summit concluded with CAA‘s Chief Compliance Officer and Deputy General Counsel Tammy Brandt, Glaser Weil’s Jesse Levin and Blank Rome’s Craig Weiner taking on AI in the big picture and the court dockets.
