Weather Report: Orange Level 6 warning for KZN’s south coast

Monday, 21 September’s Weather Report shows a mix of sunshine, cloud, rain and thunderstorms.

The west stays fine and warm, while KwaZulu-Natal faces the country’s most serious warnings today.

SAWS has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain along KZN’s south coast and adjacent interior, alongside a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across the rest of the province, and extremely high fire danger over the Nama-Khoi Municipality in the Northern Cape.

Gauteng stays partly cloudy and cool to warm. Isolated showers and thundershowers will develop.

The UVB sunburn index is “high” today.

WHY KWAZULU-NATAL AND THE NORTHERN CAPE CARRY TODAY’S BIGGEST RISK

Most other provinces stay cloudy with isolated showers today. 

Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West follow this general pattern, though specific detail wasn’t confirmed for each province individually.

The Free State stays partly cloudy and cool, with fog in the south in the morning. Isolated showers and thundershowers will develop, scattered in the north-east.

The Northern Cape stays partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Upington could reach 27°C. SAWS has warned of extremely high fire danger over the Nama-Khoi Municipality, an area that includes Springbok, where veld fire conditions are already being closely monitored.

The Western Cape stays fine.

Cape Town could reach 31°C.

George is forecast to reach 21°C.

The south coast will see morning cloud, otherwise it stays partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-east.

The Eastern Cape‘s south coast stays cloudy and cool in the morning.

Elsewhere, it turns partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-east.

Gqeberha stays partly cloudy today.

WHERE THE DAY’S MOST SERIOUS WARNINGS SIT

KwaZulu-Natal will bear the brunt of Monday’s weather.

The province stays partly cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers.

Morning fog is expected over the interior.

Durban could reach 25°C, while Richards Bay may reach 28°C.

Pietermaritzburg will see morning fog before scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers develop.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms covers the province.

SAWS has warned that heavy downpours, hail and excessive lightning could cause localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements.

Escourt, Ekuvukeni and Ladysmith have been specifically flagged.

Separately, an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain covers KZN’s south coast and nearby inland areas.

This is the most severe warning level issued anywhere in the country today.

It’s another genuinely serious warnings day for KwaZulu-Natal specifically, while the rest of the country enjoys a far calmer Monday.
