KKP targets modernization of 950 fishing vessels by 2027

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is targeting the modernization of 950 fishing vessels by 2027 as part of efforts to strengthen the national capture fisheries fleet.

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said in a press statement on Thursday (September 17) that fishing vessel modernization is one of the KKP’s six national priority programs for 2027.

“We have received a presidential directive to realize development and food sovereignty goals through six national priority programs,” he said.

The minister said the modernization target is part of the KKP’s broader plan to modernize 4,582 fishing vessels by 2029.

According to Trenggono, fishing vessel modernization is necessary to address challenges faced by fishers, including aging fleets, limited technology, high operating costs, and inconsistent catch quality.

Modernization is also essential to improving the competitiveness of the national fisheries sector, he added.

In addition to vessel modernization, the KKP’s six priority programs for 2027 include the construction of Red and White Fishing Villages (KNMP) in 1,000 locations and the revitalization of approximately 5,500 hectares of fish farming ponds along Java’s northern coast.

The programs also cover the development and replication of integrated shrimp farms spanning around 2,000 hectares, thematic inland fish farming in 10,000 locations, and the development of national salt production facilities covering approximately 2,000 hectares.

The ministry has set a 2027 budget ceiling of Rp16.65 trillion (US$912 million) to support the implementation of these programs.

Of the total ceiling, Rp13.73 trillion (US$752 million), or 82.45 percent, is allocated to national priority programs, initiatives supporting the implementation of the blue economy, as well as the ministry’s duties, functions, and public services.

Meanwhile, Head of the Government Communication Agency (Bakom) Muhammad Qodari previously said the government is preparing an investment of approximately Rp125.5 trillion (US$6.8 billion) for the construction of modern fishing vessels.

The vessels covered by the modernization program will range from 10 to 2,500 gross tons (GT) and will be equipped for various types of fishing gear, including purse seines, gillnets, handlines, longlines, pole-and-line, trawl nets, lift nets, and traps.
