The Benguet Provincial Police Office on Saturday confirmed that gas poisoning was the cause of death of the seven individuals found lifeless in an abandoned tunnel in Itogon, Benguet.

Benguet Police Provincial Office Director Dionisio Bonoy said the victims were mining gold in the tunnel, which was 300 meters deep, when the incident happened, according to a Super Radyo dzBB report.

Bonoy said that the tunnel where the miners were found was closed to the public.

The victims’ remains, meanwhile, were returned to their families, while the investigation continues.

Prior to this, MDRRMO head Engr. Cyril Batcagan said the gas may have accumulated inside the tunnel due to poor ventilation.

The incident was discovered after the seven miners failed to return, prompting other workers to enter the tunnel and check on them. —Jamil Santos/ VAL, GMA News
