The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal and damaging winds in parts of the Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and lightning, resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements, are expected over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except in the north.

Yellow Level 1 warning: Damaging interior winds, leading to localised problems for high-sided vehicles on prone routes and localised damage to temporary structures, are expected over the Karoo Hoogland local municipality in the Northern Cape and the Central Karoo district municipality in the Western Cape.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, level 5 is medium, and levels 4 and 8 are low.

Advisories

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal until Thursday.
