Gerindra denies intervening in drug case involving three lawmakers

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of Gerindra Party Habiburokhman, has assured the public that the party had not interfered in a suspected drug abuse case involving three Gerindra lawmakers in East Java.

He said Gerindra respected the ongoing police investigation and had dismissed the three members from their legislative posts.

"There has been no communication or intervention of any kind since the police sting operation," Habiburokhman said at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Regarding the transfer of several police officers in Surabaya, he said he had heard they were suspected of soliciting money from the arrested lawmakers.

"If I am not mistaken, they asked for Rp50 million (about US$2,750) or something like that. That is, of course, unacceptable," he said.

He added the transfers were disciplinary action by Surabaya Police in response to the alleged violations.

Habiburokhman also stressed that Gerindra had taken firm action against the three lawmakers.

"We respect the process, and we certainly will not interfere in any way," he said.

Earlier, Surabaya Police Chief Senior Commissioner Luthfie Sulistiawan said seven members of the narcotics unit had been transferred to sector police stations over alleged violations of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

"The transfers within Surabaya Police, including those involving seven narcotics unit officers, were made because of suspected violations of standard operating procedures," Luthfie said.
