The South African diaspora in the US came out in numbers to support the Springboks, who played the All Blacks in the Greatest Rivalry in Baltimore over the weekend.

Scenes of green and gold, both in the stadium and outside, have gone viral on social media

SOUTH AFRICAN DIASPORA UNITE AT SPRINGBOKS MATCH

On social media, South Africans living in the US were seen flocking to the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore to watch the Springboks

According to reports, the venue attracted a record-high attendance of 69 000, a record for a rugby match played in the US.

Rugby fans, wearing their Bok supporter gear and SA flags, flooded the stadium stands during the match. After a 43-24 victory and the inaugural Greatest Rivalry title, the celebrations amongst South Africans continued.

This included braaiing meat, singing and dancing in the streets, and taking over local restaurants and nightclubs.

Take a look at some of the action…

HOW MANY SAFFAS LIVE IN THE US?

According to statistics from a 2023 US consensus, around 85 000 South Africans live in the US.

The state of Maryland – where the Springboks will play – has an expat community of 2000.

However, that figure is likely to change, given the influx of South African refugees under US President’s resettlement programme.
