Jakarta plans Korean-style Pasar Baru district for 2027: governor

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta plans to transform Pasar Baru into a Korean-style, 24-hour food district in 2027 after the redevelopment of Blok M Hub is completed, Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said.

Pramono made the announcement after attending a signing ceremony involving regional and state-owned enterprises and government agencies at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

“Once Blok M is finished, we hope to start on Pasar Baru in 2027. I envision a 24-hour food district like Myeongdong, while Blok M can lean Japanese,” Pramono said.

Pramono also outlined plans to revamp Glodok and Kota Tua.

Glodok would take on a Chinese character, while Kota Tua would feature a European-style atmosphere, he said.

“Next are Glodok and Kota Tua. Glodok is Chinatown, known for its food. Kota Tua will target upper-middle-market visitors, including European tourists, with an atmosphere closer to Europe,” Pramono said.

If Jakarta’s mass rapid transit (MRT) network is extended into these areas, the route would pass four themed districts inspired by Japan, Korea, China, and Europe.

“I'm confident this will make Jakarta stand out,” Pramono said.

The Jakarta administration and PT MRT Jakarta aim to complete a full overhaul of Blok M in South Jakarta by 2029, creating a modern, integrated transit hub.

MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat said construction of the mixed-use area, combining multiple urban functions, would proceed in stages, with completion targeted for 2030.

The Jakarta administration and PT MRT Jakarta said the overhaul of Blok M would involve five key transformations.

The first is to modernize and integrate the bus terminal. The Blok M-ASEAN mixed-use area will also become an accessible, inclusive, and dynamic district.

Plans also include improving accessibility and connections between transport modes and urban functions while making it easier for pedestrians to get around.

The area will also become a commercial destination offering retail, food and beverage, lifestyle amenities, and public spaces.

The final transformation involves creating greener, more active, and comfortable public spaces for social interaction and community activities. The plan also takes into account that Blok M's buildings are 34 years old.
