Tiger attack claims Orang Asli man's life in Sungai Siput

SUNGAI SIPUT: An Orang Asli man was believed to have been mauled to death by a tiger while searching for forest produce in Kampung Takung, Pos Perwor, here yesterday.

The victim, Zamberi Angah, 42, was found dead at 6.58pm in a bamboo grove near a logging road, about 200 metres from where the attack was believed to have occurred.

Lintang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun said Zamberi was attacked while searching for rattan with a friend in the Korbu Forest Reserve.

He said the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) received a report about the incident at about 4.30pm, before a search operation began at about 6.30pm.

"Perhilitan personnel rushed to the location and met the victim's son.

"The search operation also involved police from the Lintang Police Station, members of the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (Rela), as well as about 30 villagers and logging workers," he said in a Facebook post last night.

Zolkafly said tiger paw prints and other clues were found at the location where the body was discovered.

He said he and his wife also visited the victim's family to convey their condolences and provide a contribution to help ease their burden.

"Residents are advised not to enter the area temporarily, remain vigilant and comply with all instructions from the authorities," he said.

Meanwhile, Sungai Siput deputy district police chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd Rohaizimi Razali confirmed that a report had been received on the incident.

"Today, the Perhilitan tiger unit will install a tiger trap between Kampung Takung and the Korbu Forest Reserve," he said when contacted.
