Families LEFT carrying burden when SASSA payments disrupted

Translate

When SASSA payments are disrupted because of an errant review, it is often the families who carry the burden behind the scenes. Sadly, for tens of thousands of beneficiaries reviewed each month, a missed/delayed payment can quickly become a crisis.

One reader of The South African says his parents have gone months without receiving their Older Person Grants after a series of administrative problems. Besides exhausting rounds of visits to government offices, it’s had a knock-on effect on their medical aid, transport and food costs.

SASSA PAYMENTS DISRUPTED

As we’ve already covered, December 2026 SASSA paydays have been confirmed by the agency. However, in a cautionary tale, reader rmarico highlights in the comments section of The South African how his family has struggled to resolve an issue with SASSA since August 2026.

It involves the full gamut of what could possibly go wrong with the South African Social Security Agency system. From a change of address, failed biometric verification and documentation required by the Department of Home Affairs.

SASSA CAUTIONARY TALE

Rmarico’s parents moved from the Northern Cape to Gauteng. When his father’s grant was paid late and his mother received nothing at all for August, the family visited SASSA to establish what had gone wrong. Understandably, they were told to return with documents to change their provincial address.

But his mother’s biometrics would not work, forcing the family to apply for a new identity document. A subsequent visit to a SASSA branch in September resulted in another referral to Home Affairs. This time to obtain proof that her fingerprints could not be captured. The department issued a letter which, according to officials, would be sufficient.

IT WAS NOT SUFFICIENT

“Last week, we were told that we must go back to Home Affairs to get a HANIS as well,” rmarico wrote. His parents have now missed two and four months of payments respectively. Therefore, their medical aid contributions have lapsed. And he says moving his disabled father between SASSA and DHA government offices has been particularly difficult.

This candid account highlights the often-unseen role played by adult children and relatives in sustaining elderly grant recipients, especially when SASSA payments are disrupted. They become the drivers, administrators and advocates on their behalf. It is they who must take time off work and absorb costs while trying to navigate processes that are nearly impossible for frail or disabled people.

WHY SASSA PAYMENTS ARE DISRUPTED

Meanwhile, the National Treasury is pressing government departments to find even more savings through reviews. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced in the October 2026 MTBPS that a further R38 billion in savings had been identified over the 2027 medium-term expenditure period (to 2030). Of the more than 100 000 SASSA grants reviewed this year, roughly 54 000 were suspended, a 54% strike rate.

The focus includes cutting duplication of SASSA payments, administrative inefficiencies and programmes considered ineffective. However, for families such as rmarico’s, and tens of thousands more, departmental efficiency is not an abstract target. It should be supported by a means to get an elderly parent’s grant restored without repeated journeys and months of lost income.

But what do you think? Have you experienced any SASSA payments being disrupted for? If so, how was it resolved? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
