Officially announced: Kaizer Chiefs sign new winger

Translate

Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed the signing of Bafana Bafana international Elias Mokwana.

The 27-year-old winger joins the Glamour Boys after gaining valuable experience in North Africa and the Middle East. He arrives at Naturena as a free agent following his departure from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem.

Mokwana, who hails from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, returns to South African football after spending the past two seasons abroad.

ELIAS MOKWANA’S JOURNEY TO NATURENA

“Chiefs sign Bafana International Elias Mokwana,” the club announced.

“The 27-year-old, who hails from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, returns to South African football after spending the past two seasons abroad following his move from Sekhukhune United to Tunisian giants, Espérance Sportive de Tunis, in 2024.”

Mokwana’s rise through South African football was far from straightforward.

Financial difficulties forced him to abandon his sports science studies, but he continued pursuing his football dream. He began making a name for himself in the ABC Motsepe League with Gemsbok Classic before earning a move to National First Division side Platinum City Rovers.

His performances attracted attention from top-flight clubs. During the 2021/22 season, he made 22 appearances and scored three goals, paving the way for a major breakthrough.

In May 2022, Mokwana signed a three-year contract with Sekhukhune United. He quickly established himself as an important attacking player, making more than 50 league appearances across two productive seasons.

His performances also earned him international recognition. Mokwana received his first Bafana Bafana call-up in November 2023 and was part of the squad that claimed bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

MOKWANA RETURNS TO THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP

In August 2024, Mokwana moved to Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis on a three-year deal.

He enjoyed success in Tunisia, helping the club win the league title, Tunisian Cup and Tunisian Super Cup.

The winger subsequently joined Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hazem on a season-long loan in August 2025. He made 24 appearances, including 16 starts, and scored against Al-Taawoun.

Now back in South Africa, Mokwana will be looking to make an immediate impression at Kaizer Chiefs.

His arrival adds another attacking option to the squad as the Soweto giants continue strengthening their team.
