If watching Gilmore Girls makes you want to live in Stars Hollow and Schitt’s Creek makes you realize how interesting it could be to watch a whole town full of oddballs try to figure out their lives, then you should check out Hart of Dixie. This CW romantic comedy drama series aired for four seasons between 2011 and 2015 and brought small-town gossip, complicated relationships, and lots of Southern charm to our screens. Now you can binge all four seasons for free on Pluto TV and add one more worthy title to your watch list.

Hart of Dixie stars Rachel Bilson (The O.C.) as a New York physician who relocates to rural Alabama. The show leans into rural drama, and you can recognize elements borrowed from other small-town series. Yet the show's true strength is its simple premise: a girl from a big city comes to a small town to find where she belongs. Although Bluebell is a made-up town, its residents are so vivid that you may want to visit.

Bilson stars as Dr. Zoe Hart, an ambitious New Yorker whose dream of becoming a heart surgeon hits a wall when a hospital fellowship rejects her for her bedside manner. When she discovers that her biological father, a doctor she never knew, has left her half of his medical practice in Bluebell, Alabama, she takes the opportunity to escape the city and prove herself. The thing is that the locals aren’t exactly lining up to welcome her.

Zoe must win over skeptical patients while navigating an uneasy partnership with Dr. Brick Breeland (Tim Matheson), the town physician who isn’t thrilled to share his practice. She also gets caught up in Bluebell’s social politics, develops feelings for local attorney George Tucker (Scott Porter), and attracts the attention of her charming, infuriating neighbor, Wade Kinsella (Wilson Bethel). Meanwhile, the town’s mayor, Lavon Hayes (Cress Williams), becomes one of her closest friends.

Rounding out the cast is Lemon Breeland (Jaime King), Brick’s fiercely ambitious daughter and George’s fiancée, whose complicated relationship with Zoe creates some of the show’s most entertaining clashes. As the series progresses, the residents of Bluebell become just as important as Zoe’s romantic and professional adventures. What begins as a story about a doctor who wants to get out of town gradually becomes a story about a woman who might have found exactly where she belongs.

‘Hart of Dixie’ Has the Same Small-Town Charm as ‘Gilmore Girls’

The Gilmore Girls comparison isn’t just wishful thinking, as Bluebell has the kind of close-knit community that makes Stars Hollow so appealing, complete with town gatherings, colorful local personalities, and residents who seem to know everyone’s business. There’s even a behind-the-scenes connection: The Bluebell town square was built using the former Stars Hollow set, giving the two series a literal link beyond their similar sensibilities.

Like Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore’s (Alexis Bledel) hometown, Bluebell thrives on the idea that a small town can be both maddening and irresistible. The residents have their own traditions, rivalries, and peculiar ways of doing things, and Zoe’s attempts to navigate them frequently provide the comedy. Hart of Dixie's medical storylines and romantic entanglements give it a distinct identity, while its focus on Zoe’s relationship with her biological family adds another layer to her search for belonging.

Fans of Schitt’s Creek will recognize the way a community can change the people who enter it. Zoe doesn’t arrive in Bluebell under the same circumstances as the Rose family, but she shares their initial resistance to a life that doesn’t match her expectations. Over time, she discovers that the things she once dismissed about small-town living might be precisely what she needs.

Bluebell is also considerably more invested in its own eccentricities than Zoe initially expects. From local pageantry to elaborate community events, the town has its own personality. The show knows its premise is a little ridiculous, and that’s part of the fun. Rather than treating every quirky tradition as an obstacle, it lets the residents embrace their hometown’s peculiarities.

Four Seasons of Romance Make ‘Hart of Dixie’ an Easy Comfort Watch

Romance is another major reason to settle into Hart of Dixie. Zoe’s complicated feelings for George and Wade fuel plenty of drama, but the series also gives its supporting characters their own romantic pursuits and personal struggles. Lavon’s relationships, Lemon’s ambitions, and George’s attempts to figure out what he wants all contribute to a story that feels bigger than its central love triangle.

The characters also change in ways that make the four-season run rewarding. The first season of Zoe is especially good at making her stand out as an outsider who must earn the community's trust as both a physician and a resident. Subsequent seasons explore what happens when Zoe starts to consider Bluebell home, but her relationships and work goals pull her in different directions.

Lemon is another standout. Initially introduced as a formidable obstacle in Zoe’s life, she gradually emerges as a more complicated character whose ambition and stubbornness extend beyond her romantic relationships. King’s performance gives Lemon enough bite to keep her entertaining, even when she makes questionable decisions. Her evolving friendship with Zoe becomes one of the show’s more satisfying developments.

The series has its ups and downs, particularly when romantic misunderstandings test patience or storylines take unexpected turns. Its final season is also shorter than the previous three, with just 10 episodes to bring the characters’ stories to a close. Still, the show’s warmth and appealing ensemble make it easy to return to Bluebell, even when its residents mess up their personal lives.

The series has 4 seasons full of romance, medical mistakes, and community mischief. It is perfect for those who want to feel nostalgic while watching. So, if Stars Hollow and Schitt’s Creek have already won you over, why not give Bluebell a chance?
