Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marshals season 2, episode 1.Kayce suffers another major loss in Marshals, but there's a reason why it needed to happen.
Not long after Yellowstone wrapped up on Paramount Network, Taylor Sheridan plotted the Duttons' comeback on the small screen. John III's death marked the end of an era for the Montana-based family, but his remaining kids are able to continue his legacy via their respective shows. That includes Luke Grimes' Kayce, whose Marshals was billed as the beginning of a new chapter for the Yellowstone franchise. After just 13 episodes, it became the most-watched project of the 2025-2026 TV cycle, so there was so much excitement leading up to its return.
Since Marshals season 1 ended on a few cliffhangers, its season 2 opener, "All Hat No Cattle," doesn't waste time addressing each one of them. Ultimately, Cal and Belle escape the ambush, Andrea stays with the team in Montana, and Tate is rescued. The bulk of the hour was devoted to the rescue of Kayce's son from Tom Weaver, but while the Duttons escape yet another crisis, it comes with one death that is quite bittersweet — Dolly's.
In a new interview with TVLine showrunner Spencer Hudnut justified the decision to kill Dolly as a collateral to her dad's actions in Marshals. The series boss also admitted that the incident was partly motivated by how it had been difficult to sell her as Kayce's new love interest on the heels of Monica's death. Instead of letting her walk away, Marshals decided to end her story then and there, which was also a way to emphasize how tragedy seems to follow John III's youngest. Read his full quote below:
We went back and forth about it a lot, trying to figure out the best trajectory for her. In some ways, this is a reminder that people who grow close to Kayce Dutton tend to have tragic outcomes. In the back of Kayce's mind, he brings chaos to other people's lives, even though it was really her own father.
Yeah, and that's honestly part of it. We knew that whomever we introduced first, no matter who it was, was going to be met with some scorn and would not be fully accepted by this community. We have to give proper distance to the grieving of Monica. Our poor fans find out in the first episode of the series that Monica's gone, and then by Episode 4, this beautiful breath of fresh air shows up and is interested in Kayce. We always knew that this relationship would not have a long shelf life, only because it was going to be hard to get Kayce there, and also to get our fans there.
Hudnut delved deeper into Marshals journey of introducing a new love interest for Kayce with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns. The showrunner admitted that work has been cut out for them, considering how vital Monica was in Yellowstone, so they understand that they can't just introduce a replacement and expect that it would be immediately be embraced, either by Kayce or the viewers:
It’s really one of the more — I don’t want to say difficult, but it’s one of the things that Luke Grimes and I have talked about the most since we first talked about this show. Obviously, this is a guy who has only loved one woman in his life. She was such a huge part of his life, and so much of season 1 was, as you said, dealing with the grief. So, we always knew that it would take serious baby steps to get him to a place of ever even confronting being in a real relationship. Season 1, Luke and I had a lot of conversations about where were we with Kayce and Dolly, and there were moments — I think it was episode 107, where she tried to kiss him and he wasn’t ready for that. We never actually showed them [kiss], they never kissed on camera. They know their relationship hadn’t gotten to that point because it felt like we were just still dealing with Monica’s loss. So, I think that’s one of the challenges in season 2 is trying to see how can he progress? Can he continue to hold on to Monica, but also have a life beyond her? So, Dolly, it was interesting watching when she came on, and it was very clear in her first episode that she maybe had some eyes for Kayce, and what the audience thought of that. So, we want to be true to that Kayce-Monica relationship as much as possible.
For what it's worth, even Kayce was not really sure about Dolly in Marshals. He seemed to enjoy her attention, which was totally understandable, but he was never fully open to having anything long-term with him. Beyond that, it wasn't Kayce's fault that she died. Ultimately, it was her dad's decision that killed her. Knowing that is the punishment for Tom, who survived the car crash but lost everything else. It's curious if there's a chance of seeing him again in the future.
It does sound like whatever happened with the Weavers will have an impact on Kayce and even Tate as Marshals season 2 goes along. While this isn't the first time that they experienced a family abduction, there's something particularly important in this one, as it's the first true major crisis after Monica's death. Hopefully, the father and son can move past it without compromising their already fragile relationship.
