TACLOBAN CITY — More than 6,000 employment opportunities were offered to jobseekers in three cities in Eastern Visayas through a series of job fairs organized by the Office of Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The Tacloban leg of the employment caravan was held Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Tacloban Convention Center, where more than 2,600 job opportunities were made available to applicants seeking work in local and overseas companies.

DOLE-8 Regional Director Imelda Romanillos thanked Gatchalian for organizing the job fairs, saying the initiative could help unemployed individuals find work and improve the living conditions of their families.

“I am grateful to our Senate President, Win Gatchalian, for these job fairs. I hope these activities will open opportunities that can change the lives of our applicants and their families,” Romanillos said in an interview.

She said the job fairs would also benefit participating companies and agencies by allowing them to recruit qualified applicants whose skills and capabilities match their workforce requirements.

The employment caravan began in Calbayog City, Samar, on Oct. 8 before proceeding to Tacloban. The next leg was scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12, in Ormoc City, Leyte.

Edgar Paiqah Theano Gaid, head of constituent services at Gatchalian’s office, said the initiative was part of the senator’s efforts to bring employment opportunities closer to communities and help address unemployment in the country.

“Senate President Gatchalian recognized that the country has a high unemployment rate, prompting him to bring employment opportunities closer to our fellow Filipinos so they can find decent and dignified work,” Gaid said.

Among those who took advantage of the job fair was 23-year-old Carmena Melot, a Bachelor of Science in Education graduate who completed her studies last year.

Melot said she planned to take the teacher licensure examination but was also looking for other employment opportunities while preparing for the examination.

“I just graduated last year and plan to take my board examination. In the meantime, I am looking for a job other than teaching,” she said.

She hoped to secure a decent-paying job that would enable her to help support her family, particularly her seven younger siblings.
