My marriage… With Aliu Rufus

Translate

We met in 1988 at an institution called OIC, now called NOIC. A friend of mine named Femi Adebayo (not the actor) called my attention to her. That was where it all began.

How long have you been married?

We have been married for 33 years.

What was your first impression of her?

She looked innocent, light-skinned, and beautiful.

Was there a moment when you both realised you wanted to spend the rest of your lives together?

At first sight, I knew I was going to marry her.

What was a memorable event on your wedding day?

That was when we had our introduction. I travelled to Ibadan (Oyo State) on that day; my family members were already waiting for me to show up at my in-laws’ place. I didn’t tell anyone except my wife.

How have you kept your love and friendship alive over the years?

By understanding each other, having tolerance and forgiving each other.

How has being a husband and father changed you?

Being a father made me more focused; it restrained my movements and some of my lifestyle choices. I used to womanise before becoming a husband; I had to drop those ladies to face my family.

What advice would you give young people preparing for marriage?

My advice for any young man is to know what he wants first, then pray for God’s direction, because when you seek God, even if there are any challenges or problems along the line, God will sort it out.
