27-year old woman killed by alleged drunk driver in Cebu City hit-and-run

A 27-year-old woman died in a hit-and-run incident in Cebu City involving an allegedly drunk driver who said he fell asleep at the wheel.

In a “24 Oras” report by GMA Regional TV’s Allan Domingo on Monday, CCTV footage showed the victim and her husband walking along General Maxilom Avenue when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) hit them from behind.

The victim’s husband managed to get up and attempted to chase the driver, who fled the scene after running over the victim.

“The wheels go across her chest. The wheels spinning on her chest [which] tore her skin,” said John Charles Livingstone, the victim’s husband.

“If he had stopped after hitting us to check on us or help us, she might have been fine, but... he tried to get away. He ran over and killed her,” he added.

The victim died at the hospital, according to the report.

In a follow-up operation, authorities located and apprehended the 26-year-old suspect, who tested positive for alcohol consumption based on a breathalyzer test.

“Under custody na siya. In fact, nag-undergo [siya] of breath analyzer test and nag-positive po siya,” Cebu City Police Office Deputy City Director for Operations P/Lt.Col. Gerard Ace Pelare said.

(He is now in custody. In fact, he underwent a breathalyzer test and tested positive of alcohol.)

“Based on his narration, nakatulog siya (he fell asleep) while driving,” he added.

According to the victim’s husband, he had arrived in Cebu just a day before the incident. He said they were simply out for a stroll when the tragedy occurred.

Livingstone said he is determined to press charges against the driver for taking away his wife and their dream of starting a family in the United States.

“We’re just waiting for our visa to be approved,” Livingstone said.
