TUGUEGARAO CITY — Eight crew members of a cargo boat were rescued after it partially sank off Dalupiri Island in Calayan, Cagayan, on Saturday, Oct. 31, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and local disaster response teams.

The M/B Rose Marie 1 reportedly experienced engine trouble and took in water, causing it to partially sink.

Rescuers from PCG Station-Calayan and the municipal disaster response office initially rescued five crew members and brought them ashore in Barangay Magsidel. They were later taken to the Calayan Rural Health Unit for medical examination.

The remaining three crew members were rescued by another vessel, the M/B Lagadan 1, which also attempted to tow the partially submerged boat toward shore but failed.

Jeo Robert Arirao, a staff member of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said responders would return on Sunday, Nov. 1, to make another attempt to tow the boat, which was left near Dalupiri Island.

Responders said three of the rescued crew members were suspected of having hypertension, while another sustained a laceration during the incident. /mcm
