NPFL: Ikorodu hold Shooting, Rivers fall in Benin

Translate

A thrilling Southwest derby saw Ikorodu City and Shooting Stars battle to an entertaining 2-2 draw, while Nigeria Premier Football League leaders Rivers United suffered a major title blow following a 2-1 defeat against Bendel Insurance. Elsewhere, Enyimba were handed a 1-0 setback away at Nasarawa United.

The action-packed matchday delivered contrasting outcomes across the venues: a four-goal thriller in Lagos, a pivotal home victory for Nasarawa United, and a damaging defeat in Benin for table-topping Rivers United.

At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, Ikorodu City and Shooting Stars shared the spoils in an entertaining Southwest derby that saw both sides score twice.

The encounter offered neither team the opportunity to claim local bragging rights outright, as the two sides settled for a point apiece following an evenly contested battle.

The draw leaves both teams with work to do as they seek greater consistency in the league, with the result providing little separation between the regional rivals.

In Lafia, Nasarawa United edged former champions Enyimba 1-0 to claim all three points.

The hosts made their opportunity count, with their solitary goal proving enough to condemn the Aba giants to defeat. Enyimba were unable to find a response, suffering another disappointment in their campaign.

The result will provide Nasarawa United with a valuable boost, while Enyimba must regroup as they look to improve their performances and climb the standings.

Meanwhile, Bendel Insurance recorded one of the round’s notable results by defeating league leaders Rivers United 2-1 in Benin City.

Bendel Insurance capitalised on home advantage to overcome the table-toppers, scoring twice before Rivers United managed to respond. The victory earned the hosts three important points and halted Rivers United’s progress in the latest round of fixtures.

Although the defeat represents a setback for the leaders, Rivers United will have an opportunity to respond in their subsequent matches as the battle for league honours continues.

The results underline the competitive nature of the NPFL, with the Southwest rivals unable to separate themselves, Nasarawa United claiming a narrow victory over Enyimba and Bendel Insurance taking the points against the league leaders.

With the season progressing, attention will now turn to the next round as the clubs seek to build momentum, recover from setbacks and strengthen their positions on the league table.
