KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 — Independent men’s singles shuttler Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin moved into the Vietnam Open semi-finals after upsetting China’s fifth seed Dong Tianyao in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

The Selangor-born player, who has endured a difficult run of form in recent months, recovered from losing the opening game to beat Tianyao 21-18, 21-17 at the Nguyen Du Stadium, The Star reported.

Aidil will meet Japan’s Koga Minoru in the last four as he bids to reach his first final of the year.

His most recent appearance in a final came at the Al Ain Masters in the United Arab Emirates last September.

Malaysia also saw men’s doubles pair Choong Hon Jian-Wong Vin Sean advance to the semi-finals after defeating Taiwan’s Cheng Kai-wen-Liao Chao-pang 21-16, 21-8.

Hon Jian and Vin Sean will next take on Singapore’s Terry Hee-Howin Wong for a place in the final.

However, mixed doubles pair Tan Zhi Yang-Teoh Mei Xing were eliminated after losing 16-21, 21-17, 13-21 to Taiwan’s top seeds Wu Guan-xun-Lee Chia-hsin.
