China rule Asian Games tally, Malaysia open gold account on Day 3

KUALA LUMPUR: China extended their commanding lead at the top of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games medal standings today, crossing the 50-medal mark, while Malaysia officially broke their gold-medal duck on a memorable Day Three.

China stamped their supremacy with 32 gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals for a 53-medal haul, sitting well clear of hosts Japan in second place on 11 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze (46 overall).

South Korea occupy third place with six gold, four silver and 17 bronze medals, edging Kazakhstan (6-1-5) on silver count, while Southeast Asian neighbours Thailand completed the top five with four gold, one silver and one bronze.

Malaysia enjoyed their most productive day of the Games so far, leaping into joint-16th position after claiming their first gold alongside a bronze to bring their collection to four medals (one gold, three bronze).

The historic breakthrough came through 20-year-old karate exponent Adeola Fay Robert, who defeated Iran's Fatemehzahra Saeidabadi 6-4 in the final of the women's below-55kg kumite at the Toyohashi Gymnasium.

Adeola became only the second Malaysian woman in history to win an Asiad karate gold, emulating Syakilla Salni Jefry Krisnan's 2014 Incheon feat.

Contingent flag bearer Tan Cheong Min added to the tally by clinching bronze in the women's nanquan-nandao combined event with 19.389 points, edging Iran's Helia Asadian by a razor-thin 0.003 points.

Within the Asean region, Thailand lead the way in fifth overall, while Singapore sit tied for 11th with one gold, three silver and one bronze. Myanmar are tied for 14th (1-1-1), while Malaysia and Vietnam share 16th spot with one gold and three bronzes apiece.

Indonesia sit 20th with one silver and seven bronzes, while the Philippines occupy 21st (0-1-3), ahead of Cambodia (28th, four bronzes) and Brunei (tied-32nd, one bronze).
