KDF female peacekeepers support Somali women’s businesses in Dhobley

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7-Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) female personnel serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have stepped up efforts to support women-led businesses in Dhobley by creating market opportunities for locally produced goods.

The initiative, conducted under the Female Soldiers Empowerment Program, brought together members of the Dhobley Women Association Group, who showcased and marketed their products to mission personnel.

The exhibition featured handmade products, including traditional deras, bedsheets, vikoi, sandals, and other locally crafted items, giving the women an opportunity to reach potential customers and generate income.

Speaking during the engagement, Dhobley Main Operating Base Commander Colonel Paul Nalimo underscored the importance of women’s economic empowerment in strengthening household livelihoods, promoting social cohesion and addressing socio-economic challenges that can contribute to insecurity.

The initiative also provided an opportunity for KDF personnel to interact with local community members, helping strengthen mutual trust and civil-military relations.

KDF said the programme reflected the contribution of female peacekeepers beyond their security responsibilities, particularly in supporting community partnerships and inclusive development.

“Sustainable peace is strengthened when communities have the opportunity to improve their livelihoods and build economic resilience,” KDF said.

Through the Female Soldiers Empowerment Program, the military said it was advancing a people-centred approach to peace support operations by recognising the role of economically empowered women in building resilient families and stable communities.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to link community economic empowerment with sustainable peace and stability in Somalia.
