Johnny Depp Goes Full Humbug Scrooge in Paramount’s Dark ‘Ebenezer’ Trailer

Translate

Johnny Depp, making his Hollywood comeback as Ebenezer Scrooge, is both haughty and haunted in the official trailer for Ebenezer, the supernatural revenge thriller from Paramount set for a Nov. 13 release.

The new spooky take on Charles Dickens’ oft-adapted A Christmas Carol tale from director Ti West has Depp — returning to mainstream Hollywood after a heated divorce trial with Amber Heard — looking unrecognizable as he brusquely turns away pleas for charity, before being utterly terrified by the haunting of three spirits who pull him into their frightening world.

“You’re welcome to take your chances out there,” one of the spirits advises, as zombie-like creatures loom up ahead at one point in the horror-tinged trailer (below).

“I’d rather not,” a trembling Scrooge insists, with just a bit of that Jack Sparrow swagger as the three spirits persist in making him change his wicked ways.

The Ebenezer cast includes Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Ian McKellen as business partner Jacob Marley and Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit. Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, Charlie Murphy, Arthur Conti and Ellie Bamber round out the ensemble.

West helms the film from a script by Nathaniel Halpern that adapts Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella.

The Paramount tentpole is Depp’s first mainstream Hollywood gig since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald from Warner Bros. The actor more recently shifted his attention to international movies and appeared in the period piece Jeanne du Barry.
