Pagasa: Queenie nears typhoon category
MANILA, Philippines — Severe Tropical Storm Queenie is now nearing typhoon category, said the state weather bureau on Saturday, after gaining strength since early morning.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) in its latest typhoon bulletin, Queenie was last spotted 575 kilometers (km) east northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

It currently carries maximum sustained winds of 110 km per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 135 kph while moving northwestward at 10 kph over the Philippine Sea.

As it gained strength, Pagasa said the likelihood of Queenie becoming a typhoon within the day has become higher.
“This tropical cyclone will likely intensify into a typhoon today and will strengthen further while moving over the sea south of Okinawa Islands in Japan,” Pagasa said.
However, the tropical cyclone is still forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.
It is also expected to start weakening by Monday once it reaches its peak strength. /mr
