#SHOWBIZ: Michelle Yeoh and Henry Golding return for 'Crazy Rich Asians' HBO drama series

LOS ANGELES: The long-awaited sequel to Crazy Rich Asians is officially heading to the small screen, as HBO orders a brand-new one-hour drama series.

Best of all, several of the hit movie's biggest stars are returning to reprise their roles.

Original cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng have signed on as series regulars, while Oscar-winner Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh will return in a recurring role, according to Variety.

Rather than a second feature film, the story will unfold across eight episodes based on Kevin Kwan's bestselling book trilogy (China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems).

The series will pick up where the 2018 romantic comedy left off, diving deeper into the lavish world and colourful characters of Kwan's universe.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, is stepping up as showrunner and executive producer.

Expressing her delight, Lim described the series as a "Crazy Rich family reunion," and the sequel fans have been eagerly anticipating, adding that the writers' room is already in full swing.

Director Jon M. Chu also returns as an executive producer.

Reflecting on the lasting success of the original movie—which made over US$239 million (about RM976.43 million) worldwide—Chu said that bringing the now-superstar cast back together feels like "coming home."

Author Kevin Kwan shared in the excitement, adding that seeing his characters brought to life with the breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true.
