Justin Baldoni-Produced Boxing Drama ‘House of Guerrero’ Sets Lead Cast for Director Gina Rodriguez

Gina Rodriguez is ready to take a swing with her feature directorial debut.

Carlos Sanson Jr. (Bump), Rosario Dawson (Ashoka) and George Lopez (Lopez vs. Lopez) have joined the cast of boxing drama House of Guerrero. Rodriguez will also star in the indie film that she is set to direct and produce. With a script from Bernardo Cubría (Acapulco), the project has begun production in Los Angeles and California’s Imperial Valley.

Producers for House of Guerrero include Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla for 1Community, Molly Breeskin for Rodriguez’s I Can And I Will Productions banner, and Justin Baldoni and Andrew Calof for Wayfarer Studios. Wayfarer Studios, 1Community, HarbourView Media Group and Clare LoCicero are co-financing the movie that has tax credit financing from Three Point Capital.

This marks the first collaboration between longtime friends Baldoni and Rodriguez since playing onscreen love interests Rafael Solano and Jane Villanueva on the ABC series Jane the Virgin. House of Guerrero is also the first major project that Baldoni has announced since he and Blake Lively reached a settlement in the legal battle that stemmed from their time on set together for Sony’s 2024 hit It Ends With Us.

Based on an original story from Rodriguez and Cubría, House of Guerrero centers on a once-promising young boxer as he aims to return to the ring and reclaim the life he hoped to achieve. Clayton J. Barber (Creed III) and Eric Brown (John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum) are leading fight choreography for the film.

Last week, Baldoni took to Instagram to share a video of himself hugging Rodriguez on the first day of preproduction for House of Guerrero. “God is good,” he included in the caption.

“The level of talent Gina has assembled for House of Guerrero is truly exceptional,” producer and Wayfarer Studios president of production and development Calof said in a statement. “We’re only a few days into shooting, and you can already feel the laughter, the love and the raw emotion coming through in these performances. This is a film that will have audiences on their feet cheering. With Gina at the helm, we’re in the hands of a true filmmaker with a remarkable vision and instinct for storytelling. Executive producers include Steve Sarowitz and Jamey Heath for Wayfarer and Sherrese Clarke and Niija Kuykendall for HarbourView Media Group, in addition to LoCicero and Alice S. Kim. UTA Independent Film Group is handling worldwide sales.
