Northern Territory Police say a 60-year-old man who was swept away by floodwater has been found dead, following an extensive three-day search and rescue operation in Central Australia.

The man's body was located at 1:40pm on Saturday, about 10 kilometres from where he was swept off the roof of his vehicle on Phillipson Bore Road, near the remote Aboriginal community of Santa Teresa, south of Alice Springs.

On Wednesday, a NT Police spokesperson said the man had been with a woman when their vehicle became stuck in a creek, forcing the pair to seek refuge on the car's roof.

The spokesperson said he was washed away but the woman was able to walk to Santa Teresa where she reported the man missing to police, setting the search operation in motion.

In a statement on Saturday, police said search efforts were supported by Northern Territory Emergency Service volunteers and the Police Air Wing, covering difficult terrain in an effort to locate the man.

"Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends at this very difficult time,"

NT Police said.

It comes after Central Australia was struck with widespread downpours and thunderstorms this week, which led to flooding at Uluru and caused local creeks to rise rapidly.

Police said a report on the man's death would be prepared for the coroner.
