PETALING JAYA, Sept 27 — Civil society group G25 has urged Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim to resign, saying he has lost credibility and moral authority after his role in attempts to remove His Royal Highness Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as Yang di Pertuan Besar.

In a statement today, G25 said the April 19 proclamation to depose Tuanku Muhriz was “unconstitutional, null and void” as declared by the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU), which found that three of the four Undangs behind it had no valid customary standing.

The DKU also noted that no “full and complete enquiry” required under Article 10 of the State Constitution was ever conducted.

The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has similarly ruled the proclamation invalid, stressing that neither the Menteri Besar nor the state executive council had powers to unilaterally remove the ruler.

G25 highlighted contradictions in Ismail’s conduct. He signed the proclamation on August 3, a day after taking his oath of loyalty, then later claimed he had acted “under duress” and lodged a police report. Yet, on September 16 publicly recognised the proclamation’s validity.

The group demanded he explain who coerced him, and why he subsequently reversed his position.

“The flip flops must be explained. The public deserves to know,” G25 said.

Tuanku Muhriz has since revoked the appointments of the Menteri Besar and exco members, gazetted on September 24, after they refused to recognise his authority.

G25 welcomed the Prime Minister’s strong condemnation of the state exco’s actions, which he described as “disrespectful and uncivilised”.

Calling the attempted deposition “treason” and “sedition”, G25 urged enforcement agencies to act firmly against those involved, warning that failure to uphold the Federal and State Constitutions would risk “a gradual collapse of law and order”.
