Savinder leaves behind wife Sukhbinder Kaur and three children - Kulvinder Singh, Kavita Kaur and Sumita Kaur.

Known for his role as a centre half, Savinder featured in the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

The lanky Savinder helped Malaysia win bronze medals at the Asian Games in 1974 in Teheran and 1978 in Bangkok.

He joined a great squad captained by goalkeeper Ho Koh Chye, which included key players such as Datuk N. Sri Shanmuganatan, Yang Siow Ming and Koh Hock Seng, halfbacks Joseph Johnson and Michael Arulraj, and defenders Francis Belavantheran and Harnahal Singh Sewa.

Savinder retired after the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games at the age of 40.

Shanmuganatan said Savinder was a very humble and quiet gentleman.

"He played his role well as centre-half in the 1968 Mexico Olympics.''

His cremation will be at Wadda Gurdwara Ipoh tomorrow (Oct 31) at 12 noon.
