Filipino-American rapper Apl.de.Ap said his new EP, “PPP” (Power to the Pilipino People), serves as a message to leaders and people in positions of power to prioritize the Philippines and its people.

Released under GMA Music, the three-track EP marks the Black Eyed Peas member’s first solo project outside the group. It centers on love, hope and peace, drawing inspiration from Filipino culture, values and identity.

One of its tracks, “Why,” is a collaboration with OPM rockstar Bamboo that explores the beauty and heartbreak of loving one’s country.

“‘Why’ is a love letter to the country. And like any love story, there is heartbreak in what’s happening,” Apl.de.Ap said in a statement sent to Inquirer Entertainment.

“It’s a shoutout to leaders and people in position, to care about the country and our countrymen — to act in the best interest of all and not just personal interests, and for Filipinos to not accept what’s happening and to stand up for their rights,” he added.

Apl.de.Ap said he wanted the EP to reflect his identity as a Filipino and express his love for his home country.

“This is my first solo EP apart from the Black Eyed Peas,” he said. “I wanted to make sure it represented who I am as a Filipino, and I dedicate it to my home country, the Philippines.”

“This EP comes from my love for the Philippines, with songs that hopefully will inspire and empower every Filipino. It’s a reminder for Filipinos of our own power as individuals and as a nation, and how we can make positive, lasting change in our lives and in the lives of others if we all come together and help one another,” he added.

Apl.de.Ap also expressed his appreciation for working with Bamboo, whom he described as an artist he deeply respects.

“Bamboo is a true Filipino artist that I respect so much. We have been wanting to do a collab, and I’m so happy this is the result that really showcases PPP,” he said.

“It’s a dream to be able to do this collaboration with him that shows our shared love for the country. It’s always a good time with my buddy Bamboo,” he added.

The EP’s second track, “Turn Around,” features Filipino-American artist and fellow Black Eyed Peas member J. Rey Soul. The song focuses on resilience and maintaining hope amid personal and national challenges.

“After going through a tough time with all the challenges we face as individuals and as a nation, we can continue to hope. I am singing this song for myself also to help me overcome life’s challenges,” Apl.de.Ap said.

Meanwhile, “Pinoy United,” featuring Datu Khomeini, known as the King of Moro Songs, promotes peace and unity. The track draws inspiration from Mindanao’s peace process and cultural heritage, highlighting the region’s identity through Khomeini’s participation.

Apl.de.Ap said his music continues to reflect his Filipino roots through its language, culture, and values.

“My music always reflects who I am, with Filipino words, culture, and values incorporated into it,” he said. “This EP is really about love, peace, and hope for the Filipino people.”
