Translate

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Panama, prompting a tsunami warning.

The quake happened off the country's southern coast at a 10-kilometre depth, according to the United State's Geological Survey.

The epicentre was close to the rural community of La Pitaloza in a sparsely populated area in the south of the country.

The US Tsunami Warning System has cautioned that hazardous tsunami waves were possible along parts of the coasts of Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico within the next three hours.

The system also said there was a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

There were no immediate reports of damage in Panama, while television footage showed people evacuating buildings.
