KULAI, Oct 24 — Matters concerning the position of Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain will be handled by the Home Ministry secretary-general and the Chief Secretary to the Government, said Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the matter was being handled by the two officials in accordance with existing public administration regulations.

“The matter is being handled between my secretary-general and the Chief Secretary to the Government.

“This is because the public administration has regulations to deal with such situations,” he told a press conference after launching the 78th National Registration Day (HPN) celebration, the MADANI Adopted Village (KAM) and MADANI Adopted School (SAM) programmes here today.

He was responding to questions on Mohd Shuhaily’s position as AKPS director-general while facing a court case.

Responding to criticism from opposition MPs who claimed that he had failed to act as a mediator in the issue involving AKPS and its personnel, Saifuddin said he accepted the criticism with an open mind.

However, he also questioned the ability of opposition leaders to play the role of peacemakers when their own party was facing divisions, including a conflict between groups supporting Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

Last Wednesday, Mohd Shuhaily pleaded not guilty at the Sepang Magistrate’s Court to two charges of intentionally causing injuries to police personnel Faiz Saman and Ekmal Sofwan Dirman at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sept 28.

On the same day, lawyer Datuk Rosal Azimin Ahmad, who is representing Mohd Shuhaily, was reported as saying that his client would continue performing his duties as usual unless there was an administrative directive to the contrary, despite facing the two charges in court. — Bernama
