Sincerely devoted to email signoffs | Letters

Translate

What a miserable whinge Tom Gill has subjected us to on the residual flourishes and formalities that linger on in salutations and signoffs in emails (The email sign-off is archaic – it needs to go. No regards, Tom, 25 October).

Do let’s keep such greetings. They convey a great deal in tone and intention, and the nature of the relationship, not to mention the character and wit of the writer. True, they are often quaint and archaic, but let’s have them – flourishes and snidely terse signoffs greatly enrich and inform.

So, Tom and letters editors, I remain,

Sincerely devoted to this newspaper and its often disaffected journalists,
Jane Rosenthal
Betty’s Bay, South Africa

Thank you, Tom Gill, for this. I almost literally couldn’t stop laughing, which, given that I’m on a bus, might have been embarrassing. It’s 100% on the money – absolutely hilarious!
