The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several weather warnings for Monday, with severe thunderstorms and damaging winds expected across parts of KwaZulu-Natal, while fire danger conditions remain extremely high in several provinces.

Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms are expected over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except along the south coast and adjacent interior, resulting in localised damage to infrastructure and settlements and flooding of susceptible roads and bridges.

Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging interior winds are expected over the eastern parts of the Free State and the western and eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, resulting in localised damage to settlements, difficulty with navigation, and localised problems for high-sided vehicles on prone routes until Tuesday morning.

Yellow Level 2 warning: Damaging winds and waves are expected along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, resulting in localised disruption of beachfront activities, small harbours and/or ports for a short period of time until Tuesday morning.

In SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation. SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, Level 5 is medium, and Levels 4 and 8 are low.

Fire danger warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over northern KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern parts of both Free State and North West, northern parts of Gauteng, and the central and south-western parts of Limpopo.

Advisories

A heat wave with persistently high temperatures is expected in parts of the Mpumalanga Highveld, the southern parts of the Mpumalanga Lowveld, and the south-western Bushveld of Limpopo.
