Indonesia says it adheres to ASEAN protocols amid transboundary haze

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed that the country remains fully compliant with ASEAN protocols to mitigate forest and land fires, as transboundary haze continues to affect parts of Southeast Asia.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stated that Indonesia has consistently adhered to ASEAN requirements since the bloc activated a "Level 3 Alert" status on August 26.

Under this alert, member states submit daily reports detailing hotspot data, smoke trajectory projections and local emergency responses.

"Indonesia fulfills this obligation through daily reports and various actions detailed according to the criteria of that alert level," Nabyl said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday (September 17).

He explained that Indonesia proactively provides data on hotspots, local environmental conditions, smoke movement trajectory maps, and ongoing emergency mitigation, including intensive firefighting operations.

The ASEAN Secretariat distributes these daily reports to focal points across member states to help neighboring nations determine anticipatory measures.

Despite smoke reaching the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Singapore, Brunei, and parts of the Philippines, including Manila, the ministry clarified that it has not received any formal complaints.

"We have not received any notes of protest from countries in the region or from neighboring countries," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang confirmed.

The international response to the fires includes assistance from Japan, which deployed three helicopters for firefighting operations from September 12 to 19. Malaysia has also expressed readiness to provide assistance, pending a response from Jakarta.

According to the Ministry of Forestry's SiPongi monitoring system, satellite data recorded 1,037 high-confidence hotspots nationwide on Tuesday evening (September 15), down by 400 from the previous day, indicating early progress in containment efforts.
