The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Sunday issued safety reminders to the public as Filipinos observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day during the long weekend.

NCRPO spokesperson Police Lt. Col. Hazel Asilo advised residents leaving their homes to secure their doors, windows and gates to prevent burglaries.

She also urged homeowners to avoid leaving valuable items outside their properties, which could attract thieves.

“Maliban sa ating mga mino-monitor na confiscated prohibited items, mga petty crimes lang usually [ang naitatala nung mga nakaraang taon],” Asilo told Super Radyo dzBB, adding that no untoward incidents had been recorded so far.

(Apart from the prohibited items we monitor and confiscate, only petty crimes are usually recorded during previous years.)

Asilo reminded the public that lighters, bladed or pointed objects, cigarettes and vapes are prohibited inside cemeteries.

She also advised motorists to take photos of parking attendants for accountability in case of any untoward incidents.

On Sunday morning, around 400 visitors were initially recorded at the Manila South Cemetery, which is located in Makati City but is administered by the City of Manila. It is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Manila North Cemetery in Manila, the country's largest cemetery, had recorded around 2,800 visitors as of early Sunday.

More than 111,000 police personnel have been deployed nationwide to maintain security during the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 1 and 2.

Meanwhile, environmental watchdog BAN Toxics urged the public to minimize waste and help protect the environment while visiting cemeteries.

According to environmental watchdog BAN Toxics, the Manila North and Manila South cemeteries generated a combined 278 metric tons of waste, equivalent to more than 45 truckloads, on the first day of Undas last year.

Common types of waste found in cemeteries include single-use plastic bottles, food wrappers, discarded candle packaging and other disposable materials.— MCG, GMA News
